[Despair is an artwork from the work in progress titled The [Red] Project
that deals with the need of the existence of god, of a superior creature,
that either exists or not, is an existence we need, we seek for, sometimes even we invent
and the despair that the lack of faith can provoke to people.]

Leaving myself. Reaching myself.

curated by Melina Moisidelis

The installation “Leaving myself. Reaching myself.” is a monument, with readymade material, dedicated to all those who cross borders, territorial or other kind. In the middle of the serious crisis of the numerous refugees who are obliged to migrate in our neighborhood, or in more distant neighborhoods, lately or through the past years, this monument moves the importance beyond the borders and the walls and focuses on the Human and how is obliged through the journey to evolve crossing limits. The walls as an obstacle in his access to freedom, what had to go through to get there and what will find on the other side is part of the route that will affect him drastically, a personal process of leaving behind his familiar self along with his land and discover another new self in the land that heads on. A crucial experience, which most of the times we can not foresee its ending and often we lose all the narrations that could accompany it. This artwork desires to pay a tribute to this very personal process of transformation of all those who cross borders and will never be the same afterwards.

Tender la soledad [Put Solitude to Dry]

esp

I found the crochets -my grandmother prepared as a dowry for my marriage and gave to my mother to save- in the closet of the family house after many years. They wouldn't serve for my house decoration but for taking on a journey. The hard and long process my grandmother spent when knitting these crochets knowing that they would be saved for another time period she wouldn't get to see, captured me. I wanted to start a dialogue between the past and the present, uniting her hopes for the future of her grandchildren with the reality one faces when he becomes an adult. To the complex work of the crochets that required time, patterns and repetition I only added the penetrating red thread  the same way solitude penetrates our modern lives. Also, it was a way of trimming the distance, from Minor Asia where my grandmother was born to Zaragoza where I have been living for years, through Athens where the family house still exists keeping the memory of the whole family.  The same way this work aspires to unite the solitudes of the women of my family that although they belong to different generations, saw their lives changings in different ways each (working, migrating, raising a family) and witnessed time passing as it does for everyone.

Forget-me-not
b&w digital photography
created especially for the artistic project Open Doors
selected for the opening expo of the Fórum Eugénio de Almeida
Antiguo Palácio da Inquisição, Évora, Portugal.
July 11th - October 6th 2013

Forget-me-not wants to serve as a reference to all the people that suffer from violence, repression or discrimination throughout the years. Wants to maintain alive and present the image of the tortured person, that asks through his silence not to be forgotten. It is a black and white photograph, taken at an abandoned building of Athens, more than 4 thousand klm away from the Palácio da Inquisição of Évora, on the other side of Europe. Forget-me-not wishes to be a tribute especially to the 216 women, victims of the Inquisition in Portugal and at the same time make us think of the violence that goes on every day in many places around the wolrd.
